Abbeville, Louisiana, has the distinction of being perhaps the only town in the United States that was founded by a Catholic priest who personally bought the property, subdivided it, and sold lots. This priest, Antoine Desire Megret, after having been mired in controversy in France, came to Louisiana in 1842 and found himself in the middle of a revolt by the local parishioners against foreign priests.

In order to avoid the troublesome parishioners, who owned and controlled the churches, Megret proposed to buy the land on which to build his own churches.
